NCLEX RN

Are you a nurse dreaming of working in an English-speaking country like the USA, Canada, or Australia? The NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses) is your essential second step, right after clearing an English proficiency test like IELTS or OET. This crucial exam evaluates your competency as a nurse and is your gateway to an international career.

Next Gen NCLEX (NGN 2023)

Since April 2023, the NCLEX has evolved with the introduction of the Next Gen NCLEX (NGN). This significant update brings major changes to the exam format, focusing on a more dynamic assessment of your nursing skills.

NCLEX-RN vs. Next Gen NCLEX: What's the Difference?

Both the traditional NCLEX-RN and the Next Gen NCLEX aim to test a nurse’s proficiency in real-world scenarios. However, the NGN shifts the focus from merely recalling nursing knowledge to evaluating your ability to examine and investigate patient data and make appropriate clinical judgments. While the old version primarily tested your application of knowledge, the NGN emphasizes critical thinking and decision-making in complex situations.

NCLEX-RN Test Format

The NCLEX is a computer-adaptive exam that adjusts its difficulty based on your performance. It utilizes an on-screen calculator and features various question types. As you answer correctly, the difficulty level increases. The format is built around ‘client needs’ and real-world case studies, assessing your ability to apply critical skills, interpret patient data, and make safe, appropriate decisions for patient care.

How Many Questions Do You Need to Answer?

You’ll answer a minimum of 85 questions. Depending on your performance, the computer may present up to a maximum of 150 questions.

Pre-Test Questions

The first 15 questions are pre-test questions. These are used to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses and do not count towards your score.

Duration of the Test

Regardless of the number of questions, the maximum duration for the NCLEX exam is 5 hours. This includes the introductory session, any breaks you take, and the exam itself.

Question Types

The NCLEX-RN features a variety of question formats, including:

Scoring in Next Gen NCLEX

The NGN introduces a more nuanced scoring system:

  • +/- scoring: You earn points for correct answers, but points are deducted for incorrect choices in some question types (negative scoring).
  • 0/1 scoring: You receive a score of 1 for all correct answers, with no negative marking for wrong answers.

Lab Scores or Values

A significant improvement in the Next Gen NCLEX is that any required reference lab values for calculations will be provided within the question. This eliminates the need to memorize these values, which was a requirement in the old NCLEX.

NCLEX-RN Exam Registration Process

Here’s a step-by-step guide to registering for the NCLEX:

  1. Submit an application to the nursing regulatory body of the country/state where you wish to be licensed.
  2. Fulfill the requirements listed by that nursing regulatory body.
  3. Register for the NCLEX.
  4. Receive your Authorization To Test (ATT).
  5. Schedule your exam.

The NCLEX is structured around specific test plan categories, including:
